So i've got a url like

after i type the hyperlink without

around the url it throws a 404 error and i must type the trailing slash around the url to really make it work..

this really is my htaccess code

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^item/([0-9]+)/(.*)/(.*)/?$ item.php?action=item&id=$1&desc=$2&page=$3

i've discovered this after searching:

# add trailing slash
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^.*[^/]$ /$0/ [L,R=301]

which kinda solves my problem but how do i result in the trailing slash to become optional through the user when the user really wants to add it or otherwise therefore it wont redirect each time a slash isn't found
