I'm a complete database newbie. To date, I understand will be able to connect with MySQL using PHP's mysql_connect() command, but aside from that, I truly aren't seeing how to get that data and set it onto an internet page.

a) exist ways apart from mysql_connect()

b) allows say I'd a table of information in mysql and all sorts of I needed was for your table (for instance: listing of names and numbers) to now show up on my web site. I can not for that existence of me look for a tutorial with this.

$database_name = "dbname";
$mysql_host = "localhost"; //almost always 'localhost'
$database_user = "dbuser";
$database_pwd = "dbpass";
$dbc = mysql_connect($mysql_host, $database_user, $database_pwd);
    die("We are currently experiencing very heavy traffic to our site, please be patient and try again shortly.");
$db = mysql_select_db($database_name);
    die("Failed to connect to database - check your database name.");

$sql = "SELECT * FROM `table` WHERE `field`= 'value'";
$res = mysql_query($sql);

while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($res)) {
    // code here
    // access variables like the following:
    echo $row['field'].'<br />';
    echo $row['field2'];

Take a look at mysql_fetch_assoc mysql_fetch_array and mysql_fetch_object

This is actually the very fundamentals, you will need to look for lessons. You will find many about.

First hit on the internet for "php mysql": http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/phpmysql

Or if you need a hit around the mysql page itself: http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/ddws/index.html

You need to really read a great tutorial.

Here's one

Edit: Past too far. )

Take a look at e.g. this tutorial, which appears to do something much the same - a previous address book with names and numbers, using PHP and MySQL. Which should clarify several things :)
