I'm less than sure things i am doing, but found this code on-line for any custom excerpt like me attempting to return 140 multibyte Japanese figures on the custom top of the page in WordPress. It might be that I don't possess the strip_tags function. If that's the case, can someone please let me know what I have to do in order to get this work? Thanks.

front.php -
    $recentPosts = new WP_Query();
<?php while ($recentPosts->have_posts()) : $recentPosts->the_post(); ?>
    <li><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php echo winexcerpt(140); ?></a></li>
<?php endwhile; ?>

functions.php -
function winexcerpt( $length ) {
   global $post;
   $content = mb_substr(strip_tags($post-&gt;post_content),0,$length);
   return $content;

strip_tags continues to be included in PHP since version 4, therefore it is most unlikely that this is actually the problem. (Nevertheless, without having multibyte string support enabled, the megabytes_substr will fail.)

However, it appears like there is a mistake when you have copy/copied and pasted the code - the "-&gt;" part inside the strip_tags line ought to be a "->".

i.e.: Inside the winexcerpt function, the road ought to be:

$content = mb_substr(strip_tags($post->post_content),0,$length);

As a result, it may be as easy as fixing that error.
