I am attempting to password safeguard a directory in wordpress during my cpanel and it is no longer working, wordpress keeps obtaining the Web addresses and conntacting it's own software. How do i circumvent this?

Even when I put my files in /wp-content/uploads/downloads/ will still be not realizing them as downloadable, it forwards to some wordpress 404 error

1) produce a .htaccess file within the directory you need to hide with this particular content:

 AuthUserFile /www/path/to/file/.htpasswd
 AuthGroupFile /dev/null
 AuthName "Confidential Information"
 AuthType Basic
 require user admin

then produce a .htpasswd file with this particular content:

admin:password

after which only user 'admin' with password 'password' should have the ability to access directory.

or..

2) should you just move it below compared to public HTML root folder then it's not necessary to be worried about password safeguarding it - nobody can can get on without direct server access

Produce a .htaccess file inside your downloads directory:

AuthUserFile /path/to/file/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Confidential Information"
AuthType Basic
require valid-user

Produce a htpasswd file (outdoors your internet root) like so:

htpasswd -bc /path/to/file/.htpasswd admin password
