I am searching to personalize an order for subcategories indexed by a navigation bar in Wordpress. The codex causes it to be obvious that you will find five ways to get this done: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_categories#Parameters. I'm restricted to two: 1) prefixing each category having a number and a pair of) using term_group. However , the Codex appears to become pretty vague regarding how you can take advantage of term_group because it only describes it as being several terms. I understand that the category that contains the term, "video," always must be placed first, a category that contains the term, "roster," always must come second, etc. It is possible to way to do this without prefixing the slug and perhaps using term_group?

There's a wordpress plugin that does that:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/order-categories/

To get this done generically for terms (with custom taxonomies), you should use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/term-menu-order
