Hi I've got a Wordpress installation having a static primary page and posts page using the title articles.

My custom permalink string within Wordpress is placed to /%postname%

and my htaccess file is placed the following:

 <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteBase /
 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
 RewriteRule ./index.php [L]
 </IfModule>

After I browse towards the articles page, my url rewrite appears like this:

example.com/articles/page/5

EDIT ----- The articles page is the one which I personally use to browse all articles having a previous article along with a next article link.

Thus next article gives me example.com/articles/page/6 and former article will bring me to example.com/articles/page/4

however I'd like the "page" part to alter to article and also the "number" towards the actual particle title. EDIT ------ Finish

I must obtain a setting the following:

example.com/articles/article/the-article-name

wouldso would I achive this?

Consider using a trailing slash in your permalink setting: /%postname%/

Edit 5/02/10:

Look at your .htaccess for multiple, conflicting rewrite blocks.

If want this: /articles/article/name-of-article

The set "articles" as the category base and set all articles inside a category known as "article":

Posts Categories SubPanel « WordPress Codex

And your paging come in the format page/2/, etc.

If all of your posts are basically 'articles' (i.e. you do not mind getting 'articles' within the URL for those publish-related permalinks - groups, tags, single posts etc.), then simply just set your permalink structure to

/articles/%category%/%postname/

Clearly if you would like the dwelling articles/article/post-name/, you will need to file posts inside a category with slug 'article'.
